Hi Guys! What is our Tuesday Tip? Give attention to Pathways as an important Design
Element! Pathways in backyard spaces make an unmistakable footprint in outdoor living
design This video will focus on the ease pathways make for us while adding overall
aesthetic beauty.
I’ve always loved pathways. They exist in our everyday world when walking through
backyards & landscapes; but, we never talk about them. When was the last time you
said, “Hey, did you notice how great that path was?” There is something unique about
pathways, they feel good as we walk along them. Although unexpressed, we
consciously enjoy the pathways to our destinations.
PATHWAYS CREATE FLOW & ACCESSIBILITY
During the design process – your mind is on choosing the big, beautiful features you
dream of – like an outdoor kitchen, firepit, hot tub . . . but think about how these areas
will connect. Pathways allow access, they create flow, and are pivotal to an efficient use
in your outdoor space.
They lead us to the destinations we are drawn out to while being stand-out features of
their own as you can see here in the Kimberlie Ct property. Pathways & Boulder steps,
and a step-over waterfall, it all flows perfectly.
Next, we see an overgrown front yard & entrance way – By adding concrete steps and
walkways, the transformation is a design masterpiece and talk about curb appeal . . .
Walkways can be used to tie areas of a landscape together to provide fluid
accessibility. Like in the Gilbert Property. Notice the steep-dirt-hill in this side
yard. Betcha no one went this way to get to the backyard before. I would have slid
straight to the bottom – on my bottom! Remember pathways connect one
destination to another. By adding this boulder staircase, we created easy access
to the back yard and we couldn’t resist adding a private view-nook under the
stairs.
Pathways can actually set the mood in your outdoor space. This can be done through
design, style, color, and even texture. And there are so many options. Pathways can be
natural stone, flagstone pavers, gravel with wood, concrete and many more landscape
materials. They can change mid-stream from one material to another or you can mix it
up in a landscape. The reality is, they give flair while adding function.
This cabin in the woods shows off the many pathways winding you through and around
a forest setting. From the driveway, out to the garage, round to the back porch, or
headed toward the firepit. A mix of slate hardscaping, gravel with steppingstones, and
boulder steps – all provide pathways to take you to all destinations in the landscape. If
they weren’t there, imagine the soggy, shoe-soaking paths you’d have to etch out on
your own.

Yes, pathways are overlooked but they allow you to walk through your outdoor space all
year ‘round without getting your shoes wet and dirty. Back from the woods, choose your
path to walk down, around and through these amazing landscapes. Notice the mix of
boulders, stones, and hardscaping paths.
CONCRETE PATHWAYS
Like cleaner lines? Minimalist vibes? Stacked concrete wedges. Concrete and wood
duos. Crisp modern looks in nature. We love these modern landscape looks.
BEFORE & AFTER PATHWAYS
Everyone enjoys before and after photos. Notice the difference that pathways,
walkways, and stairways make in landscape design. Ease, function and feng-shui . . .
These really are extraordinary… And the homeowners think so too!
Boulder steps & Waterfall feature
Create ambiance with Step-Over walkways. Usually, these fun features are designed over
waterfalls or even dry creek beds. It’s super cool to have a path go up and overflowing water.
Boulders are a unique feature for a stairway or along a pathway. Take a boulder stairway to a
winding pathway –to feel like you are a part of nature. Some prefer a more classic walkway. It’s
your style choice – make it while finalizing your top-priority design elements. These styles offer
tranquility, functionality, minimalism, order & openness, and with some – even a sense of
mystery like these pathways to private retreats . . .
Thanks for Walking along our pathways – So what did you think?
They led us to entrances, backyards, down, around and through water features, across
lawns and to private retreats. Destination pathways connect our backyard spaces – &
with each step we silently notice them and although rarely discussed, we enjoy the flow
& ease of a pathway.
